(2)We have a substantial movable column of all arms
stationed here ready to protect British in- terest, wherever these interests may be thmat- aned,
and
(3) A mountain battery is sent here, and
(4) Our Volunteers are provided with proper B.I.
guns instead of M.L. guns of cld pattern, and
(5) That our guns should be provided with smokeless
Ammunition.
There is yet one other point which we require for the enforcement of a strong Chinese Policy at Peking, as op- posed to our recent fatal policy of drift, and that is a statesman of the calibre of Lord Cromer with full power to
act.
I fear that I have run to considerable length in this letter, but my Committee are most anxious that your Com- mittee should, especially at the present crisis, be put in full possession of our views.
